ABOUT GUYV

Growing-Up Korean American Youth Volunteer Group

GUYV is a non-profit youth volunteer group founded in 2020 for the purpose of serving our communities through volunteerism. Our volunteer members consist of Korean American middle and high school students. GUYV hosts various volunteering events and activities to serve our communities and preserve our environments. GUYV aims to enable its members to maintain their identity as a Korean American by providing opportunities to appreciate their unique cultural heritage and taking care of cultural and historical sites. Furthermore, this youth volunteer group intends to empower and nurture its members into wholesome future leaders through diverse educational seminars and workshops.

Mission and Purpose

1. Community Service

Engaging in community service provides the youth volunteer members to become active members of their community. By engaging them with the community they live in, the youth volunteers can create special bonds with the community members being served and increase their awareness and responsibilities about the needs of the society they live in. By helping others in need, the youth volunteers can increase their life satisfaction and come to build positive images about themselves and others.

2. Identity Development  

All the volunteer members have their unique ethnic identity as Korean Americans. Their cultural heritage canprovide an automatic sense of unity and belonging and allows them to better understand previous generations and the history of where they come from. By engaging diverse activities and services enhancing their ethnic pride and understanding, the youth volunteers can develop their wholesome identity as a Korean American who lives in the American society welcoming ethnic diversity. 

3. Leadership Training

Youth leadership is crucial for the future of our society. Building strong youth leadership is key to contributing to the betterment of our society. For that purpose, GUYV provide various educational seminars and workshops for its volunteer members to pursue personal growth and develop their potential as future leaders.

Main Activities and Services

1. Community Service

  1. Recycling (as a main fund-raising program): Quarterly Activities
  2. Homeless Service; Donation to Korean American Senior Homeless
  3. Nursing Home Visit and Service
  4. Letters (or Cards) to Veterans/Troops
  5. Shoe Box Sending Activity
  6. Events/Activities in association with Happy Village

2. Identity

Maintain cultural heritage as a Korean American by providing community service at the Korean historical sites

  1.  Peace-Monument/Glendale Library Clean-Up
  2. McArthur Park Clean-Up
  3. Visit of other Korean cultural sites and provide support they need

Pursue personal growth as future leaders

  1. First Aid and CPR (LAPD)
  2. Various Seminars (e.g., Drug/Alcohol Addition Prevention & Cyber Bullying)
  3. Marathon
  4. Research & Reflection Journal related to activities/services

Membership

All new members must submit an application form and with a check made out for $150 to the Growing-Up Korean American Youth Volunteer Association. When the new term begins on September of every year, all members must pay an annual membership fee for $150. Members will have the opportunity to participate in various events related to the volunteer program. All members will be notified periodically by email (or text) of the various events, scheduling, meetings, and fees.

VOLUNTEER HOURS

Each new term begins on September of every year and ends on August of the following year. Members will select by order of seniority the events in which they wish to participate. It is vital that all members access their email account regularly as all announcements including member responsibilities will be made by email. At the end of each term, the volunteer that most exemplifies the spirit of preserving the Korean-American cultural heritage and serving community and its values nominated by the Growing-Up Korean American Youth Volunteer Association to receive the Presidential Community Service Award, the nationally recognized honor extending presidential gratitude to those taking positive steps to change the world through their volunteer service.

 

To qualify for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the following is required:

 

  • Recipient(s) must be a U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted permanent resident of the United States.
  • Awards are issued for service hours served within a 12-month time period or over the course of a lifetime.
  • Awards are issued for volunteer service only; additional levels of participation with the organization such as charitable support are not a factor considered for the award.
  • Court-ordered community service does not qualify for the award.
  • Awards are issued by approved certifying organizations.
  • Hours are measured over a 12-month period and awards are based on cumulative hours.
  • Awards are offered in multiple levels and are designed to recognize each milestone of service achievement.

** President's Lifetime Achievement Award: Individuals who have completed 4,000 or more hours in their lifetime.

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS OFFICERS

Officers in the Growing-Up Korean American Volunteer Association are as follows: Youth Volunteer Director, President, and two Vice Presidents (Secretary and Accounting). Nominations for the positions of President and Vice President shall be based on the length of membership and volunteer hours. The President must have at least one year of experience in the Growing-Up Korean-American Youth Volunteer Association. It is the responsibility and duty for the President to participate in all facets of this program as an example to all other volunteers. All officers shall hold office for one term, from September to August of the following year.

The President of the Youth Volunteer Program shall be a high school student (11th Grade); Vice Presidents and Coordinators will be comprised of high school students from the 10th grade or older. At the end of each term, all officers and coordinators in good standing shall receive Youth Volunteer Program Awards based on their performance.

RECYCLING PROGRAM

The Recycling Program is a vital fundraising program for serving the community. Each Recycling Program aims to organize collection of recyclables, recycle, and collect revenue. Every year, members will visit the areas in need and donate their collected revenue to fund assistance. Each volunteer is expected volunteer ten hours per quarter (three months) and earn $15 for the Recycling Program.
